When you click on the blocked article, you would a paragraph or two followed with this reminder:
Similarly, if you click on paid content about Japan or Asia, then you could see this paywall notice:
You need to be a paid subscriber to read the exclusive content from The Japan Times online site.
Before I share with you the four workable ways to access The Japan Times, you can also try this:
Copy the article title and do a Google search.
Occasionally you can find the full article in the Google search results page.

Currently I find these following methods can still get over The Japan Times paywall.
I have tested it out and it can still get through The Japan Times paywall, as seen below.
1. Archive.Today
This method works for both Firefox and Chrome browsers.
Use the free archive site called Archive.Today, which stores snapshots of web pages.
If the article which you want to read which has already archived, it would prompt you that it is available.
You can read right away.
But if it is not archived, then you have to wait for awhile for it to archive it, before you can read it.
This is what you do:
Go to Archive.Today.
Paste the locked For Subscribers article URL in the space provided under "My url is alive and I want to archive its content".
Next click the "save" button.
If that article has already archived, you can read it straight away.
But if it is not archived, wait for it to finish archiving, then you can view the complete article.
Archive.Today extension
For convenience, install and pin Archive.Today extension to your browser.
For Chrome, get the extension here.
Mozilla Firefox has removed it, but you can still use this similar One-Click Archive.Today extension.

3. Add a dot after .jp
This method to get behind The Japan Times paywall is the simplest and it works.
NOTE: In order for this easy and simple way to get past The Japan Times paywall, you need to disable the Bypass Paywalls Clean extension.
Anyway, this is how this method works:
You add a dot after the the top-level domain .jp in the article URL.
Example: The article "Alain Delon: A 'god' in Japan".
As you can see it is blocked.
The URL is:
https://www.japantimes.co.jp/culture/2024/08/20/entertainment-news/alain-delon-japan-fans/
Add a dot after .jp and now it looks like this:
https://www.japantimes.co.jp./culture/2024/08/20/entertainment-news/alain-delon-japan-fans/
The dot is highlighted in yellow, so you can see it clearer.
Press the "Enter" key, and the full article of "Alain Delon: A 'god' in Japan appears.
4. Clear cookies and data then reload
This method is for both Google Chrome and Brave browser.
When you come to the blocked article, click on "View Site Information" icon at the address bar.
A menu box pops up, click on "Cookies and site data".
Another box appears, click on "Manage on-device site data".
A bigger box pops up, click on all the dump bin icon to remove it.
Then click the "Done" button.
Finally click on the "Reload" button.
It would automatically reload the full unblocked article.
