For years, I made the mistake of manually converting every single image into WebP format before uploading it.

Since 2023, Blogger has introduced official WebP image serving support as part of Google's newer image optimization system.
Even if the WebP setting is disabled, Blogger may still automatically deliver images in modern formats like WebP when supported by the visitor’s browser.
Blogger doesn't just store your files as static uploads.
The platform uses an automated compression engine powered by Google's global delivery network to silently convert, compress, and deliver your images in the modern WebP format.
What is WebP and why does Blogger use it?
WebP is a modern image format developed by Google specifically to make the web faster.
It provides superior compression for web graphics without a noticeable drop in visual clarity.
According to performance benchmarks, WebP images are roughly 25% to 34% smaller than standard JPEGs, and up to 26% lighter than equivalent PNG files.
When you upload a photograph into the Blogger post editor, Google treats that upload as a high-resolution master file.
Instead of serving that heavy master file directly to every visitor, the server keeps it in the backend and generates lighter, compressed WebP versions on the fly.

However, running into quality issues usually isn't a flaw in the WebP format itself.

It shrinks your images pixel-by-pixel without removing a single piece of visual data.
Blogger automatically uses this for things like screenshots, text graphics, and logos.

Don't let that fool you.

Use this 3-step trick to uncover the hidden file type on your published blog post or page:
- Go to your live published blog post image.
- Right-click directly on it and choose "Save image as..." from the menu.
- When the Save as page pops up, you can see the Save as type: WEBP File.
