To avoid being penalized by Google Updates, one thing you should beware is, the anchor text of your backlinks.
Do Not use the same or similar anchor text to link back to your site.
What you should do is use a mixture of different kind of links to point back to your site, if you want to get better ranking on Google. As long they have keywords in the anchor text.
Here are four kinds of links you should use:
1. Your blog or website URL
2. The name of your site
3. The name of your product
4. Generic words (e.g. check this out, click here, etc)
