There are various ways how to access Gothamist paywall without signing up its daily newsletter.
I came across 2011 Gothamist article, "NYTimes.com Paywall Is Up, There May Be Ways Around It" by Jen Chung.
Ironically, this article itself is behind the paywall.
Anyway, this is not an affront to the mentioned Gothamist article.
To get past this paywalled article, I tried out with these few common methods, and sure enough they work wonderfully well.

As it is a so-called soft paywall, it is easy to remove it without much hassle.
For those of you who want to read an article or two by Gothamist, without having to be deluged with its daily newsletter, then keep reading...
Now, let's go through each method to get behind Gothamist paywall, to read all its articles without an account.
1. Google Translate
It is a simple trick to slip past Gothamist paywall, translate the blocked article URL via Google Translate site.
By the way, this is the translated article URL:

2. PrintFriendly
This method is similar to the Google Translate.
Paste the article URL in the space provided by PrintFriendly site, and click the yellow "Preview" button.
It would generate out the full unblocked article.
3. 12feet Ladder
Use the 12feet Ladder to get over Gothamist paywall.
Here are three ways of doing it.
i. Go to the 12feet website, or here and paste the article URL, and then click the "Clean Webpage" button.
ii. Use 12feet proxy Chrome extension.
This is the 12feet Chrome extension.
Download, install and pin it to your toolbar.
When at a paywalled article, click the icon at the toolbar.
NOTE: The other 12feet extension, has shut down.
iii. Add https://12feet.io/ in front of the article URL.
For example the article URL is:
https://gothamist.com/news/nytimescom-paywall-is-up-there-may-be-ways-around-it
Add https://12feet.io/ in front of this URL.
Now it looks like this:
https://12ft.io/https://gothamist.com/news/nytimescom-paywall-is-up-there-may-be-ways-around-it
Then press the "Enter" key to reload the page.
4. Textise
This is another paste-and-click method to bypass paywall.
Go to the text-only accessibility online tool Textise.
Paste the article URL in the space provided, click "Textise" button.
"Textise" button.
Instantly the full Gothanist.com article appears, but without any image.
5. Clearthis.Page
You can also this free online tool Clearthis.Page to clear paywall, ads, pop-ups and more.
Add the bookmarlet to your toolbar, then just click it to remove the paywall.
How to set up Clearthis.Page:
Go this site, drag the link to your bookmark bar.
When at the blocked article, click the Clearthis.Page icon at the bookmark bar.
Instantly the full article appears.

6. Wayback Machine
I tried out the Internet Archive Wayback Machine, and it get past Gothamist blocked article tool.
Similarly, paste the article URL in the Wayback Machine page.

7. Archive.Today
This tip is by using the popular archival website Archive.Today to get the free artricle.
Again this simple method is, paste the article URL on the site and click.
This is what you do:
Go to Archive.Today site.
Scroll down a little, there is a black color box with the text: "I want to search the archive for saved snapshots".
If the article has already archived, you can read it right away.
If otherwise, then you have to archive it first, before you can view it.
8. Disable JavaScript
Turning off JavaScript is another common way to get around paywalls.
There are various ways to disable JavaScript.
Just to bypass a paywalled article, you can use the popular uBlock Origin extension or the DevTools.
